Hi John,

Glad you liked the article.

I can only speak from being 30 years old, but I certainly can feel the difference between now and being 20. My training habits have changed dramatically over the last 4 years, I have been continuously injured and I am now training around my injuries, and actively stretching and rehabilitating as I train (just back home from Yoga now. I would never have thought I would be a Yoga regular 10 years ago!).

Interestingly, a couple of years ago I was chatting to Dave MacLeod about injuries, and I was probably moaning, and he replied that for the last year he hadn't been able to do a pull up due to tendonitis, but had structured his training and rehab around that. I think he was climbing about 8c+ at the time!

Where there is a will there is a way.

Good luck!

Great article Jack. I think there's some good golden rules for training that apply across the board and across the ages. But there's also a shortage of specific information on training for climbers who are over 50 - people who may still have ambitions to step up the grades but who face greater difficulty striking the balance between the need to push yourself in training and remaining injury free. On a slightly different note, your piece reminds me of a response Stevie Haston made when someone complained on a thread that it was all right for Stevie, he could do hard routes because he had the 'right build.'
Stevie's reply to the complainant was blunt and to the point - 'rebuild yourself then.'

Hi Andy, glad the article was of use.

I am going to follow it up with two more on similar lines, as I design my friend a tailored program for 2012.

Best,

Lets hope 'the major sea cliff' is still standing by the time we get there and there are enough bulldogs and drive in bits of metal to make it possible!
